Understanding protein in twin pregnancy

Short, plain-language explainers grounded in nutrition research. Always discuss your individual needs with your provider.

Why protein matters

Protein supplies amino acids that build new tissue — for your babies, your placenta(s), your blood volume, and your changing body. In a twin pregnancy, demand is significantly higher than in a singleton pregnancy.

  • Supports placental growth
  • Stabilizes blood sugar
  • Helps appetite & satiety

Twin pregnancy nutrition

Carrying twins typically increases calorie needs by ~600 kcal/day and protein needs meaningfully above standard pregnancy guidance. Spreading protein across meals helps absorption.

  • Aim for protein at every meal
  • Don't skip breakfast
  • Include iron-rich proteins

Fetal growth support

Adequate maternal protein is linked to healthier birth weights and reduced risk of growth restriction — especially relevant when growing two babies at once.

  • Critical in trimesters 2 & 3
  • Pair with adequate calories
  • Hydration matters too

Maternal recovery support

Postpartum tissue repair, milk production, and energy recovery all draw on protein stores you build during pregnancy. Protein is also a foundation for lactation success.

  • Supports wound healing
  • Fuels milk production
  • Helps preserve lean mass
